Natural Homesteading

Neck Warmers!  And more...

Sewing is something that has become a passion for me in the last several years.  I'd look at something and think "I can do that."  I think the obsession started taking hold when we set foot to on the path of homesteading.  Making things at home instead of spending money at a store.
You see I'm pretty cheap.  Not that I don't wait to buy nice things discounted. I just want to get them for next to nothing.  (A few months back I was standing in line at Church waiting to fill my families plates with food during our weekly carry in.  Standing in front of me was a friend and we were bragging about who was the cheapest.  He grabs his red T-Shirt and shakes it and says "Five dollars... Dollar General".  I, in turn, grab the sleeve of my brass studded, cute, and trendy teal shirt and said "Four dollars... Target".  He left it at that!.")  So when I say cheap I mean almost free.

Sewing as a hobby/obsession would make sense for someone who has a sewing machine, or if said someone actually sewed... You see my grandma (the only real seamstress in the family) would "help" me with my "I can do that" projects.  AKA take over and not let me touch her machine.  I'd sit over her shoulder practically drooling with desire to just "Try it."  And she'd say "Okay just let me do this..." and it would be done.  I learned that if I wanted to even watch her complete a project I'd have to take it home unfinished.  Or she'd sneak up to her sewing room and finish it for me by herself!

All that to say I recently acquired my great grandma's sewing machine from my grandma's attic. And I'm as happy as a little lark. I've told everyone that I think will care, and a few that don't. I've been looking on-line for easy things to start my sewing journey with, I've found several to work from, and came up with one on my own.  I want to share them with you now.  Not really as a tutorial, because you can find them on-line pretty easily, but just because when we homestead we do things from home.  Where we're happiest.  And let me say it again I'm pretty happy right now!
Jamin may start a section on DIY projects, but maybe you'll just get to hear me talk about them.  (If you want to know what I did. Email me and I'll send more details).
The pictures that you see are of my first project and my two girls and they are, in my opinion the cutest girls out there.
The first picture is of an old hand me down shirt that Jamin got from his Nana's husband.  (This is a picture of it after I cut it.  I didn't think to take one before.  And of course I couldn't find Shalom's warmer for the picture.)  It hadn't been worn in years... so now's it's time to shine.  Then you'll see the neck warmer and then my girlies (Shalom 3, Ruth 1).  I also included a picture of a scarflet I made for myself out of the same shirt.
Their neck warmer is just the sleeve of his shirt cut off with three buttons sewed on.  I loosely followed a tutorial I found on Pinterest for my scarflet.

Peace and Blessings in HIM,
Celia

Oh and a big thank you to Janele who cleaned out her closet and drawers.  I acquired a TON of shirts to cut and mess around with.  (Like I said I'm cheap... Actually I want it free!)
