Some days back we were invited to our friends house for a family picnic. Scott and Ireena have an annual picnic that is usually for family only so we were honored to be invited this year! They showed us around their 10 acre farm which includes lots of peacocks, one of which was sitting on her nest under a chair not 20 feet from us. Our closeness must not have bothered her much since she didn't move from her post and hardly gave us the time of day. Rosebud (top) was grazing along with some goats and a couple of cows that were taken on trade for Ireena's midwifery services. Our tour included a walk back around the house, past the pasture and the many beautiful trees Scott and Ireena planted years ago and then on a path that leads through the woods where lies my favorite part of their property, the little log cabin they built. It is a small, one room, quaint little cabin. They used to have it furnished with a bed, table, and little nicknacks but sadly, the squirrels have taken over so they had to take a lot of the furniture and decorations out~ but the wood stove and cute cafe curtains remain, and the best sign is still hung above one of the windows, it says, "Faith shines brightest in the dark.(view)" Thank you, Scott, Ireena, and family for including us in your family time and reminding us of the sweet simplicities of life, and even when the "squirrels" have been destructive in our lives that "Faith shines brightest in the dark."
After bidding our friends goodbye we decided to go to a local fall 4-H fair at a nearby town. We, well I, love fairs! I love everything about them, the food, animals, people, smells, even the corny lady who sang songs up on the huge bandstand with canned music. Never in all of my life have I heard canned music on a bandstand!!! Anyways, Josiah finally had had enough of the sweet lady and had to get out of there!
We always like sharing whatever food we get with one another so we can sample lots of things. This year we had these HUGE homemade pretzels with sweet mustard and hot cheese for the dipping sauces, Jamin and Celia bought one of those giant mugs of homemade sasparilla (and other kinds) of pop for $5.00 per mug then $1.00 ever after that for a refill for the rest of your life!! Great deal, huh? We all drank the first one then sampled two more flavors. Every year we have to get the salt water taffy. We got 5 for $3.00. This year peanut butter was our favorite. They put little nuts in it! While walking through one of the commercial buildings we ran across a booth that is from a soda fountain shop my mom and grandma used to take my brother and I to when we were young. We would visit my great granny up north and in her little town was this soda fountain called "Tasty Nut Shop." This place has been around since I can remember. AAAHHHH!!!! memories!!! There's a picture with Josiah sampling one of the turtles we bought from them(view). Turtles are one of my favorite candies!!!
Well, I need to wind down for now. I want to let you all know that Tom's Wit and Wisdom is up and running. We invite you all to write to him with any question concerning gardening, home fixit things (like carpentry), bees, family life....Please go to our e-mail address with your questions then Tom will pick out a question or two from time to time and put the answer on under his topic.
